A Mixed Bag of Performances
The first half felt like a typical pre-season game – lots of possession and pressing but not much excitement. Clement had mentioned he’d try out different starting elevens for this match and the upcoming Birmingham City game. United brought some big names, with Casemiro leading the charge and young Leny Yoro making his debut at center-back.
There were moments when our boys looked sharp, pressing high and trying to win possession. Amad Diallo, our former winger, gave Jefte a tough time, managing to create some dangerous opportunities. The best chances for us fell to Cyriel Dessers and Scott Wright, but neither could convert. Tom Lawrence came close with a long-range drive, but it was Diallo who split the sides with a brilliant run and finish just before halftime.
United made wholesale changes, bringing in a youthful side that allowed us to dominate possession. However, we couldn’t make it count. Rabbi Matondo should’ve done better when through on goal, but it was Hugill who added another for United with a strong run and finish. Onana made a solid stop from Danilo late in the game, but overall, it was a frustrating half for us.
New Faces in the Squad
Connor Barron Good in Breaking Up Play
Among our new signings, Connor Barron has stood out the most. With Raskin injured, Barron will be crucial in the opening weeks of the season. He’s adapted quickly and shown promise, despite a few overenthusiastic passes.
Jefte’s Tough Day
Jefte had a challenging time against Amad, who seemed determined to prove a point. The young defender struggled to contain him, leading to the opening goal. It’s early days for Jefte, and we hope he’ll learn from this experience.
Rangers Positives in the Middle as Diomande and Sterling Shine
Dujon Sterling
With James Tavernier potentially on his way out, Dujon Sterling’s performance at right-back was under the microscope. He didn’t disappoint, showing strength and reliability. Sterling, alongside Diomande, looks set to be a key part of our squad next season.
Diomande
Diomande has already established himself as a cornerstone of our midfield. Despite being just 22, his technical skills and presence on the pitch are impressive. He and Sterling are players we can build around.

Struggles in Attack – We Urgently Need to Add Quality
Our forward line was disappointing, with Dessers having one of his poorest performances in a Rangers jersey. He looked unfit, lacked movement, and his distribution was off. This is a worrying sign as we approach the new season.
Scott Wright and Tom Lawrence
Scott Wright was involved in our best chances, which is concerning given fans have long questioned his quality. Tom Lawrence was okay but didn’t really impact the game. We need more from our attackers if we’re to challenge this season.
Looking Ahead What Do Rangers Need to Do
It’s clear we’re not ready for the new season yet. The friendly highlighted our need for more depth, especially in midfield and up front. The news of Raskin’s injury adds to the urgency.
The mood among us fans is understandably tense. However, pre-season is all about building fitness, and there’s still time to turn things around. A strong performance at Tynecastle or a couple of exciting signings could quickly lift our spirits.
