In a hard-fought battle at Rugby Park, Rangers clinched a crucial 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock. Despite the less-than-ideal playing conditions and an early setback, Rangers displayed resilience and tactical prowess to turn the game around in the second half. Let’s delve into the key moments and performances that shaped this important win for the Light Blues.
Before kick-off, much talk surrounded the plastic pitch at Rugby Park. The heavy rain during the game added an additional layer of difficulty, causing players from both sides to struggle with footing and ball control. While some speculated that the wet conditions might improve things for Rangers’ quick passing game on a poor surface, it quickly became evident that adaptability would be the key to success on the night.
An Early Setback for Rangers and Resilient Response
Kilmarnock took an early lead through a penalty converted by Daniel Armstrong, putting Rangers on the back foot. Armstrong’s attempted cross struck John Lundstram on the arm, and this was deemed to be a handball offence by the match day referee. The decision seemed harsh, given Lundstrams arm was by his side as he turned his back to block the cross. However, his arm moves away from his body after the ball strikes it, so we can understand why the referee has given this. However, we would have expected VAR to pick up on his arms position during a review, but this was not forthcoming.
Despite this setback, Rangers remained composed and gradually gained control of the midfield, creating opportunities to equalise. Kilmarnock looked to sit and hurt Rangers on the break, and Rangers at times certainly struggled to play through or around Kilmarnock.
Rangers Second-Half Turnaround
The turning point came in the second half, Manager Philippe Clement’s strategic substitutions and tactical adjustments played a significant role in Rangers’ victory.
Several players stood out for Rangers throughout the match. Jack Butland’s crucial saves, including a magnificent stop early in the second half, kept Rangers in contention. James Tavernier’s leadership and quality set-piece delivery proved instrumental, while Tom Lawrence’s composure in front of goal secured the vital win.
Captain James Tavernier’s showed the quality Rangers poses with his expertly taken free-kick levelled the score, injecting renewed energy and belief into the team. Shortly after, Tom Lawrence’s clinical finish put Rangers ahead, completing a swift and decisive turnaround.
Rangers Manager Gets Starting 11 Wrong for Kilmarnock Game
The Rangers Manager, Philippe Clement has been a sensation since he took over the hot seat earlier in the season. The turnaround in the performances has been remarkable. We are a massive fan of his style and undoubtable qualities. Last night however he got the starting 11 wrong. To his credit he made the changes at Half Time with the introduction of Ridvan Yilmaz and Cyriel Dessers, two players we predicted would start the game against Kilmarnock.
The performance of Borna Barasic was particularly disappointing during the match, with a lack of quality of grit on the left side of the pitch mainly due to his performance. This was an area that Kilmarnock were targeting and seeing success from. His predictable approach of looking to cross each time he made his was forward made it easier for Kilmarnock to defend.
Barasic was not directly responsible or involved in the penalty Rangers conceded, but his poor judgement on the night certainly contributed. In the phase of play before Barasic had been shepherding the ball towards the byline when he felt contact from a Kilmarnock forward. After reviewing this, there certainly was contact, but it was very minimal. Barasic went down, grabbing the ball as he did. The referee then awarded Kilmarnock a free kick which led to the penalty being awarded. The Rangers left back has opportunity to play the ball back to Butland or to clear the danger. We are in a title fight, but no one seems to have told Barasic. He needs to be stronger.
Strength and physicality was what was missing from Rangers at the start of the game. This is something that any Derek McInnes team will have plenty of. Fabio Sliva and Ross McCausland found out about this during the first half, with them being out muscled and easily forced off the ball. The service to Silva, mostly from Barasic was often high and to the head or chest, this is not his game and it did not do him any favours.
Managing the Game and Defensive Solidity
As the game entered its closing stages, Rangers demonstrated maturity in managing their lead, maintaining possession in the final third and frustrating Kilmarnock’s attempts to equalise. Despite late pressure from the hosts, Rangers’ defensive resilience ensured they held on for a valuable three points.
Rangers’ hard-fought 2-1 away win against Kilmarnock showcased their ability to overcome adversity and seize crucial moments in the game. With determination, tactical astuteness, and standout individual performances, Rangers continue to assert their dominance in the Scottish Premiership, maintaining their pursuit of success in the 2024 season.
