Rangers navigated their way into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 triumph over Ayr United, displaying professionalism and composure against lower-league opposition. While the victory may seem routine on paper, it’s essential to recognise the challenges inherent in such encounters and temper expectations accordingly.

Facing off against a determined Ayr United side from the Championship, Rangers approached the match with the respect it deserved. Despite being heavy favourites, the team understood the need to remain focused and disciplined throughout the encounter.

From the early stages, Rangers asserted their dominance, seeking to control possession and dictate the tempo of the game. However, breaking down a resilient Ayr United defense proved to be no easy task. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Rangers found themselves thwarted by determined defending and the occasional near miss.

The breakthrough eventually came through Borna Barisic’s early strike, providing Rangers with a slender lead. While many may have anticipated a more comprehensive scoreline, credit must be given to Ayr United for their organisation and resilience, which kept the match finely poised for much of the game.

Throughout the encounter, Rangers remained patient and disciplined, avoiding complacency and continuing to press for further goals. Despite dominating proceedings, they were met with stern resistance from Ayr United, who battled admirably until the final whistle.

The introduction of fresh legs off the bench injected renewed impetus into Rangers’ attack, eventually leading to Fabio Silva’s decisive goal in the second half. While the margin of victory may not have been as commanding as some would have expected, the manner in which Rangers approached the match exemplified their professionalism and respect for the opposition.

With the quarter-final draw of the Scottish Cup now revealed, Rangers find themselves pitted against formidable opponents in Hibernian. As excitement builds among fans, anticipation grows for what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two Scottish football powerhouses.

The clash against Hibernian presents Rangers with a significant challenge as they continue their quest for cup glory. Their journey to the quarter-finals reflects their resilience and determination, making them formidable adversaries for Philippe Clement’s men.

Starting Lineup for Rangers v Ayr United Match

We had predicted that McCrorie would be in goals to give him some game time, however the manager went with Butland in goals. The defensive line remained the same as the previous match. Philippe Clement did make some changes in the middle of the park, with Lundstram dropping out and Raskin and Jack playing the deeper roles. Diamonde came in for Cantwell in a more forward position.

Oscar Cortes was the stand out player of the match, with Fabio Silva and Ryan Jack getting pass marks in the first half. Lundstram and Todd Cantwell made a difference when they came on in the second half.

Nicolas Raskin needs to do more when given the opportunity on the pitch, and while it’s true he is working his way back from injury and needs game time to build both fitness and sharpness, we are left feeling that chances may before less likely as competition in this area of the pitch is greater and we are heading into the business end of the season.

Scott Wright had a disappointing match, something we have all heard and said before. He should have done more during this match. When Sima is back fit will we see Cortes moving over to this side of the pitch to provide competition for McCausland and Wright drop down the pecking order? Off the back of that performance, it seems likely.
