As Rangers fans, we’ve weathered many storms together—on and off the pitch. But what we’re seeing unfold behind the scenes at our beloved club is more than just a bump in the road. It feels like we’ve hit a brick wall, and the loss of confidence in the boardroom is becoming impossible to ignore.
A Leadership Exodus Without Replacements
Over the past year, Rangers have seen a mass exodus of senior figures, with key roles left unfilled for months on end. The resignation of Creag Robertson, Head of Football Operations, is just the latest in a string of high-profile departures. We’ve lost a Chairman, a Director of Football, a Head of Academy, and now Robertson—all with no clear plan for replacement.
It’s deeply frustrating to watch the club we love operate without a clear leadership structure. How are we supposed to compete at the highest level when the foundation is crumbling? The fans, myself included, are left wondering: what is the board waiting for?
A Sensible Fix: Bring in Rangers Men
Suggestions have been swirling about possible solutions, and there’s one that seems to resonate with many of us—bringing back Rangers men like Kevin Thompson or Steven Davis to lead the Academy. These are individuals who not only understand the game but also bleed blue. They know what this club stands for, and they have the experience to guide our youth development.
It’s an obvious move, but sometimes the obvious solution is the right one. Bringing in someone like Thompson or Davis would restore a bit of structure in the Academy and show the fans that the club is willing to take decisive action to fix these glaring problems.
The Most Crucial Decision: Appointing the Right CEO and Chairman
But the Academy isn’t the only area that needs addressing. The CEO and Chairman positions are arguably the most critical decisions the board will make in the coming months. Rangers cannot afford to appoint another stopgap or someone with limited ambition. We need leaders with experience, a vision for the future, and the ability to drive the club forward. It’s not just about filling a seat—it’s about taking this club to the next level.
The suggestion from FourLadsHadADream that these positions must be filled with the right people—those with the clout and know-how to push Rangers back to the top—hits the nail on the head. This is a football club, not a business that can afford to make short-sighted appointments just to plug gaps.
Succession Planning is Key
What’s even more concerning is the apparent lack of succession planning at the club. Several of these departures were rumored for months, yet we’re still no closer to finding replacements. How can a club of Rangers’ stature not have a contingency plan in place? If we lose a key figure, we should already have someone lined up, ready to take the reins and continue driving the club forward.
This isn’t just about the CEO or Chairman roles either. Every leadership position, whether in football operations or the boardroom, needs a proper succession plan. It’s the same principle we apply to the playing squad—if someone leaves, you bring in someone of equal or better quality to ensure the team doesn’t skip a beat. The board needs to adopt that mentality as well.
It’s Time to Take Action
Rangers cannot afford to drift any longer. We are a club with ambition, history, and a fanbase that deserves much better than the chaos we’ve seen over the last year. The board needs to step up, make the tough decisions, and bring in leaders who can take this club forward.
Let’s not settle for the easy option—let’s demand the best. Because that’s what this club, and its supporters, deserve.
