After yet another international break, Philippe Clement’s Rangers side head to Ayrshire on Sunday lunchtime to face Kilmarnock, a team managed by former Rangers player Derek McInnes. Kilmarnock have struggled to find consistency but are coming off the back of an impressive comeback victory against Dundee. Rangers, on the other hand, need to maintain their momentum to keep up with the early Scottish Premiership pacesetters.
The question on every fan’s mind is: how will Clement line his team up as we embark on a crucial month of fixtures?
Injuries Still a Concern, But Danilo Could Make the Bench
In Friday’s press conference, Philippe Clement gave an update on the squad’s injury situation, stating it was better but “not good enough.” While there’s good news with Danilo potentially making the bench, Rangers are still missing key attacking options. Wingers Cortes and Matondo are recovering from injuries, while Hagi’s suspension and McCausland’s minor knock further reduce forward options.
Danilo’s potential inclusion would provide a boost, but on Kilmarnock’s artificial surface, Clement might be cautious with him. As a result, Cyriel Dessers will likely lead the line once again, hopefully he can rediscover some form up top. Fans might also see Hamza Igamane as a left-sided option in future matches, adding variety to the attack.
Tactical Tweaks in Defence?
With a packed schedule ahead, there’s always the temptation to rotate, but Clement may be reluctant to make too many changes in defence. However, this writer believes that Neraysho Kasanwirjo, nicknamed “Nana,” deserves a starting spot. Fresh off impressive performances for both Rangers and his international side, Nana could slot in at left-back, offering more defensive solidity and allowing Jefte to push further up the left side.
This would enable Nedim Bajrami to play in his preferred No. 10 role behind the striker, where he’s at his most dangerous. While Clement seems set on keeping Tavernier at right-back, a switch to bring Nana into the starting XI would is an option. Though in all honesty, the correct move would be play Nana at Right Back instead of Tavernier.
Who Will Partner in Midfield?
Rangers’ midfield has shown flashes of control and creativity this season, and Sunday will likely see Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande continuing their partnership in the centre. Both players have impressed in general so far this season, with both capable of offering the kind of energy and creative presence that’s been crucial in our high-tempo play. Clement will be hoping that the duo can boss the middle of the park, especially with Kilmarnock likely to sit deep and try to frustrate.
Predicted Lineup for Kilmarnock v Rangers: Consistency With a Twist?
Here’s how I expect Clement to line up against Kilmarnock:
GK: Jack Butland
RB: James Tavernier
CB: John Souttar
CB: Robin Propper
LB: Neraysho Kasanwirjo
CM: Connor Barron
CM: Mohamed Diomande
AM: Nedim Bajrami
RW: Vaclav Cerny
LW: Jefte
CF: Cyriel Dessers
While Clement’s lineup may not feature wholesale changes, it’s the small tactical tweaks—like Nana coming in at left-back and Jefte pushing forward—that could make all the difference. Cerny will look to build on his impressive performance against St Johnstone, where his dynamic wing play was crucial in securing all three points.
A Crucial Month Ahead
This match marks the start of a critical period for Rangers, with several significant fixtures on the horizon. Sunday’s game against Kilmarnock might seem straightforward on paper, but we know that trips to Rugby Park are never easy. Clement will be keen to get his team firing on all cylinders as we look to keep pace at the top of the table and build momentum for what’s set to be a defining month for the club.
