The 2024/25 Scottish Premiership season kicked off in a tense atmosphere as Rangers and Hearts played out a goalless draw at Tynecastle. Despite the excitement and anticipation of a new season, neither side could find the back of the net, leaving fans frustrated but hopeful for improvements ahead.

Rangers Defensive Woes Persist

From the outset, it was clear that the Rangers’ defence looked shaky and disorganised. The pairing of John Souttar and Ben Davies has yet to convince, and their performance at the weekend did little to change that perception. Without a commanding leader in the backline to marshal the troops, gaps appeared, and Hearts took advantage. It’s evident that manager Philippe Clement needs to address this issue promptly to prevent it from becoming a recurring problem this season.

James Tavernier, usually a stalwart in the Rangers lineup, seemed off the pace throughout the match. His lack of defensive diligence and erratic passing further up the pitch was concerning. As captain, much is expected of Tavernier, and he’ll need to quickly find his form if Rangers are to challenge for the title this season.

Bright Spots Amidst the Frustration

Despite the goalless draw, there were positives to take away from the game. New signing Connor Barron was particularly impressive on his debut. His energy and creativity in midfield provided a spark, and he was unfortunate not to score with a well-placed strike early in the first half. Ridvan Yilmaz and Mohamed Diomande also showed promise, with Ridvan’s adventurous runs and Diomande’s solid presence in midfield standing out.

Once Again, Dessers: Close but No Cigar

Cyriel Dessers put in a commendable shift, showing excellent work rate and link-up play. His movement in the box and ability to bring others into the game was notable. However, as has been the case too often, his finishing let him down. Dessers came agonisingly close, hitting the woodwork, but he’ll need to sharpen his scoring touch to become the reliable striker Rangers need.

Disappointing Performances in Forward Lines

Tom Lawrence had a mixed performance. While his passing, crossing, and shooting were of high quality when in possession, his mobility and defensive work in the number 10 role left much to be desired. This imbalance needs addressing, as it leaves the team vulnerable when transitioning from attack to defence.

Rabbi Matondo, coming on early in the second half, failed to make a significant impact. With the competition for places heating up, Matondo will need to step up his game and show more consistency and influence when given the chance.

So, What’s the Road Ahead for Rangers?

While a goalless draw to start the season is not the end of the world, it does highlight areas that need urgent attention. The defensive frailties must be resolved, and the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal. With a long season ahead, there’s time to iron out these issues, but the work must start now.

Rangers fans will be hoping for a more cohesive and dynamic performance in the next match. The potential is there, as evidenced by the flashes of brilliance from Barron and the solid displays from Ridvan and Diomande. It’s now up to Clement and his team to turn that potential into consistent performances and results.

Let’s rally behind the team and hope for a stronger showing in the coming fixtures. Onwards and upwards, Rangers!
