Challenging Conditions

The weather played a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the match. Heavy rain and high winds made the playing surface difficult for both teams. The pitch quickly deteriorated, affecting the flow of the game. Despite these challenges, Rangers demonstrated their adaptability, moving the ball well and creating numerous chances.

Missed Opportunities

The early minutes of the game saw Rangers squandering several opportunities, with Cyrial Dessers missing three clear chances, one of which could be classified as a ‘sitter.’ Rabbi Matondo also failed to capitalize on a promising chance. The ball boys were kept busy retrieving the ball from the stands due to the numerous missed opportunities.

Rangers’ Breakthrough

Rangers finally broke the deadlock on 35 minutes when John Lundstram headed home from a well-delivered corner by Ridvan Yilmax. This marked a rare goal from a set-piece for Rangers, providing a positive sign for their attacking prowess. Six minutes later, James Tavernier’s precise cross found Dessers, who made no mistake this time, doubling Rangers’ lead before half-time.

Second-Half Action

The second half witnessed deteriorating weather conditions, resulting in a quieter period of the game. On 78 minutes, Rabbi Matondo earned Rangers a penalty with his explosive burst into the box, and James Tavernier coolly converted to extend the lead to 3-0.

Dumbarton’s Response

Dumbarton showcased resilience, winning a corner that led to Matthew Shiels heading home a consolation goal. However, Rangers’ vulnerability from set-pieces became a concern for the manager, marking the third consecutive game in which they conceded from a corner.

Closing the Game

Rangers swiftly put an end to any hopes of a Dumbarton comeback. One minute after conceding, Scott Wright displayed skill and pace, driving a low shot past the Dumbarton keeper to make it 4-1. The introduction of Fabio Silva in the final 20 minutes added flair and quality, offering a glimpse of what he could bring to the team in the upcoming weeks.

Team Prediction Review

As we predicted the manager went with a strong team to face Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup 4th Round. However, there were a few positions we did not get right. Robbie McCrorie got the nod ahead of Jack Butland, with the Rangers manager commenting on his performances in training and the importance of him getting game time so he’s ready if required.

We thought that Barisic would start the game, but the manager went with Yilmaz to start the game. Barisic came on in the second half. With Barisic fit to play, is Yilmaz currently the first pick for the manger at Left Back?

Fabio Silva did not start the match, but did look good in a few moves when he came on in the second half. The manager went with Rabbi Matondo out on the Left Wing for Rangers.

Subs: Barisic (4), Lawrence (6), Jack (5), Silva (6), Wright (6)

Robbie McCrorie did not have a lot to do in this match, but when called upon he made some good saves. James Tavernier’s influence on the match was impressive. He should have had an assist with a cross to Matondo, got an assist when he crossed for Dessers to score and then converted the penalty.

Questions have to be asked of the Rangers defenders after Rangers concede from a Corner in the third game in a row. Todd Cantwell continues a worrying period where without making clear mistakes, he does not seem to impact the game. Cyriel Dessers will not want to watch this one back with a number of wild shots and missed chances.
